TOTM Top 10 Movies?

Editor's Note: Before the Top of the Morning staff begins releasing our top ten movies, we want to make sure we haven't missed any. So tell us TOTM readers, what movies do you think should be on our list? You can nominate LDS movies here. We have one we think is deserving, but we'll be sponsoring a top ten LDS movies list in the near future so you may want to limit your LDS suggestions to your favorite pick.

The big screen Dolby Digital City clip above makes you feel like you're hunkering down for a great show. So pop some corn (without butter and some sea salt of course) and tell us what movies you think should be on our list. What movies bring you to your feet in the comfort of your own home?

I don't know, it would depend on my mood at the time. Let's see...

I would say Frequency, but you probably already have that one on the list.
If my list was for movies that I like to watch over and over, it would include:
Pirates #1
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Hunt for Red October
The Wedding Planner (Matthew McConaughey- what more do I have to say?)
The Core just because I never tire of watching it.
Star Wars #1 no wait that would be #4- New Hope?- because of all that it opened for movies in the way of special effects
Anything with Fred Astair and dancing, but my favorite is Top Hat

My nomination for LDS movie would have to be Brigham City. The sacrament scene spoke volumes to me about the atonement, forgiveness, and forgiving.

Nice list. I don't think I've ever heard of The Core. Is that a Shalaman (sp) movie? Having a hard time with anything Deutcher. After hearing him lecutre/scold LDS people, LDS artist, LDS directors at a recent LDS film festival a few years ago, I lost my appetite for his movie-making, directing, and his world view.

Sandra said...

No, not Shyamalan. The Core came out in 2003, directed by Jon Amiel. It is a Sci-Fi about the core of the earth stops spinning and has to be restarted. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298814
I think it didn't get a lot of publicity because it came out right after the space shuttle disintegrated and it has a big space shuttle crash scene.
This is a lighthearted moment in an otherwise intense film, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUgA-j9G_64
When I watched it for the first time, I had to remind myself to breathe.

Oh, that reminds me of another movie I love to watch and had to remind myself to breathe during, Verticle Limit. Love it, too.

And I will have to agree with you about Deutcher, but I still like this particular movie.

Nice list too. And lots of variation. You are a movie afficionado, aren't you?

So, do you have any great lines or favorite lines (sometimes great and favorite are different) from any of your selections? Just wondering. It could save the TOTM staff hundreds of hours of gleaning through shows to find that one gem of a line. Tell us, please.

As you can see by Jessica's comment, we have been talking movies here at our house. You have challenged us to find that one gem. We have a lot of favorites and you will often hear us quoting our favorite lines if it fits a situation. But, as you said, great and favorite are not always the same. I know that there have been scenes/quotes/lines that have changed us, made us think, helped us see things in a new way. Now we just need to reach back in our memory banks and find them. And then we will probably have to watch them.

Jess, what about the one we discussed last night while shopping?

And Dave- happy birthday.

Ooo, Dave! You're slipping! Someone else knows when your birthday is, too! Way to go, Sandra! I nearly went "public" with that information last year and he threatened to TP my house and slash my tires! ;> Sheesh! Since the cat's out of the bag: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAVE! :)

Okay, dearest. Time to share your movies and your favorite lines from the family round table discussion at your house. What is the gem of gems?

Bonnie:

Funny you should use the word slipping. I slipped today after washing off some walkways, cracked my skull in a free fall, life flight to the hospital, lost of blood, stitches, brain scans, ouch! All is well. I just have this apprehension for walking barefoot on wet, cold cement.

From A Knights Tale Id go with either
"Willam:My pride is the only thing that they can't take from me.
Jocelyn: They can take it away from you, they can and they will. Oh, they will. But love they cannot take. " or "You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting."
A walk to remember im going with "Landon: Okay. "Find out who you are, and do it on purpose." That's Dolly Parton." the invisible I can think of one right now but ill get back if I do.. The day after Tomorrow "Brian Parks: Sir, I am president of the Electronics Club, the Math Club, and the Chess Club. Now if there's a bigger nerd in here, please ... point him out." This ones from the Bourn supremacy but they are all good movies "Jason Bourne: What were my words? What did I say? I said leave me alone." Behind enemy lines "Admiral Reigart; Where there's a will, there's survival. Remember that Burnett." Annapolis this one I say to my friends all the time.. "
Twins: Cause Jake, you're my Mississippi.
Jake Huard: I'm your what?
Twins: People who live in Arkansas, you know what their favorite state is ?
Jake Huard: No.
Twins: Mississippi. Cause Mississippi's the only thing that keeps Arkansas from being the worst state in the whole country." From Kung Fu Panda o there are so many but ill go with "Po: Skadoosh! " cuz it sounds cool. and one thats not on my list is one from Premonition a very good movie and a quote I was telling my mom about in the car last night "Faith is just believing in something beyond yourself—something you can't feel or smell or touch, like hope or love."

Hmmm, fear of bare feet? May I suggest a pair of slippers? ;>

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. I DO hope you feel better very soon...I know there are about a zillion boys who benefit from being in your presence at training. What can I do to help?

Dave,

It's December. You should not be walking barefoot on cold wet cement. Because I'm the mom and I said so, that's why.
All kidding aside, I'm sorry that happened. Not a fun way to spend the day.

I keep thinking of more and more movies and reasons why I should include them on a list. If I started listing them in a comment, my comment would be super long. I am going to just have to do a post on my blog sometime this week. I have chapter to read and a paper to write, then I'll do the post.

I know it looks like we watch a lot of movies here at the house. We used to have a movie day once a month where no housework other than dishes was allowed. All homework and chores were finished up the night before, we would go to the local Hollywood or Blockbuster and I would let each child choose a movie. Then we would spend all day on movie day in our jammies, gathered on the couch and watch all the movies. With 7 kids that turns out to be a lot of movies. But it is one of those things that the kids look back on and remember as a good time in a really bad time of our lives.

Jess, I'd have to vote with you on the one line from Kung Fu Panda. :) My 19-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter will sometimes look at one another with a very meaningful look, hold their little pinkies in the air, and at the same time say: "Skadoosh!" What a hoot!

I have many favorite movie quotes, but this one rocks. "Let me ask you something. If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other?" God in Evan Almighty. I also think that there are several really good movies, but I have to say Bucket List has a really good moral. I would get it, but I have limited resources at the moment.

How bout Field of Dreams:

Moonlight Graham: You know we just don't recognize the most significant moments of our lives while they're happening. Back then I thought, well, there'll be other days. I didn't realize that that was the only day.

Favorite movies is a great subject. But who can name only one? Here are some of my faves:

Life is Beautiful (life changing)

Rear Window (suspense) and lots of funny banter:
Stella: You heard of that market crash in '29? I predicted that.
Jeff: Oh, just how did you do that, Stella?
Stella: Oh, simple. I was nursing a director of General Motors. Kidney ailment, they said. Nerves, I said. And I asked myself, "What's General Motors got to be nervous about?" Overproduction, I says; collapse. When General Motors has to go to the bathroom ten times a day, the whole country's ready to let go.

The Princess Bride (hilarious)Best line: My name is Indigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

The Bishop's Wife (holiday heaven)
Best line: Nobody expects him to be normal. He's a bishop. (ha ha)

The Shining (scariest)Best line: Heeeere's Johnny!

Field of Dreams (Iowa, baseball and good moral. Loved Burt Lancaster as Doc Graham. Best Line: Is this heaven? No, this is Iowa.)

I could go on, but it is 3:30 a.m. and my mind is dead. Happy New Year! (from Julie)
